True story

Okay, this one isn't so much a gag as a nice piece of art/introspection, but I'm glad to finally get it posted.

True story: this was one of the first ideas that I sketched out when I started drawing cartoon ideas en masse back in 2012. At the time, I was stupidly using a ballpoint pen and filling up a notebook that had ivory-colored pages. Some of those ideas were both good and fairly well-drawn; I could have scanned and posted them right away except the ballpoint didn't create very good lines and I didn't know how to whiten the scans of those off-white pages.

Well, I finally figured out how to resolve that second problem, and this piece is about a ball-point pen, so up it goes -- just a few years after I drew/wrote it.

And there I wrote ten times more words than the drawing contains in order to explain the drawing. Remind me not to do that again!

Kiwi conservation comics

I drew this a few years ago during a summer workshop at the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont, but I don't think I have ever posted it online until now! This is just one of the many conservation-themed comics stories I hope to do in the coming years. I have a few already scripted, and a few others in the works, so stay tuned for more!

One of my earliest four-panel stories (if not the earliest). I drew this the summer of 2009 for my workshop at the Center for Cartoon Studies. For some reason I haven't scanned or posted this until now.

This is another old one, drawn in 2009 and then for some reason never scanned. Since then Lulu has survived surgery, cancer and an infection in her eye. She inspires me every day.

It's fall foliage season here in Maine, with thousands of retirees coming to view the gold and red leaves. This is what I imagine some of them are thinking.

This one goes out to the friends with scars and the people who love them.

Well, that's it -- the last of the 8 experimental cartoons for September. Weird, quick, dark and totally different from anything else I have ever drawn. I hoped you liked 'em. I wonder what's in store for October?

Look inside yourself

Here's the first of 8 brand-new cartoons for September, notable for several reasons:

1. Did I mention 8 new cartoons? When was the last time that happened?
2. They're all experiments in style and tone. None of them look or sound anything like any cartoon I have ever drawn before.
3. They're mostly dark. Dark, dark, dark. To be honest, I'm a little scared to show some of them to you. But they're all queued up in the Blogger systems, so I'm going for it.
4. They were all drawn super-fast. I spent about three hours writing, drawing and scanning the whole set. I wanted a certain energy that I would not have been able to achieve with my normal methods, so I picked pens and styles that would just flow. Consider this entire month a grand experiment all around.

I hope you enjoy 'em. Or at least don't try to have my committed after reading them.

(This was drawn -- quickly -- a few years ago. Luckily we moved on last year and these floods are all a thing of the past. But the people in the old condo complex still live in the horrid little hells of their own making. Enjoy!)

(PS -- I know this scan kinda sucks, but I lost the original in the move -- just one of many, many things we lost in the floods. No, I'm not bitter. Not at all.)
